<description><![CDATA[<b>What is Guardium? </b>
Guardium's technology helps clients safeguard data, monitor database activity, and reduce operational costs by automating regulatory compliance tasks. 

<b>When will Guardium be available for IBM Business Partners to sell? </b>
Guardium software products are going into Passport Advantage on August 1.  They will fall into Optim,  so it's just like a few extra part #'s are being added to the Optim portfolio. 

<b>Who can sell it? </b>
Optim authorized BPs will be eligible to order Guardium on Aug 1. 

Heritage Guardium BPs will continue to buy direct from IBM for several weeks.....until we can transition them over to new contracts so they can buy through VADs.  When that happens, those BPs will be authorized to buy thru VADs via the "grandfathering rule" and they will have until Feb 2011 to get certified into SWVN, before being booted. 

<b>Are there Guardium certs? </b>
There is a Guardium sales cert (M75) and a Guardium technical cert (M194) available now.  Both are part of the Optim list of eligible certs, so BP's can chose to get authorized for Optim via Guardium certs or Optim certs...or a mixture of the two.  While existing Optim partners will be authorized to sell Guardium, we will be pushing partners that want to sell Guardium to take the certs for Guardium.  We can't stop an Optim partner from selling Guardium and vice-versa, but we'll encourage partners to get skilled on both.

<description><![CDATA[As a reminder, effective August 1, 2009, IBM announced in Channel Communications Letter <a href="https://avnetadvantage.com/resource/1490/">CC0907-202</a> that Business Partners will be subject to a penalty of $2,500 for each transaction found non-compliant under the Solution Assurance requirements. This penalty will be assessed only for noncompliance on mandatory Pre-sale and Pre-install TDA requirements as outlined in the TC/DP List, which can be found on PartnerWorld via the following <a target="_blank"  href="http://partners.boulder.ibm.com/src/assur30i.nsf/WebIndex/SA855">link</a>.

In addition, a penalty of $25,000 will be assessed for any transaction where the failure to perform a mandatory Expert TDA is responsible, in part or whole, for a critical situation being opened with IBM. 

Business Partners are required to use the appropriate SAPR, Discussion Guide or Checklist provided by IBM in the Solution Assurance Trigger Criteria and Designated Product list to facilitate a Pre-sale or Pre-install Technical and Delivery Assessment (TDA) and provide this document to IBM if requested.

One of the most popular products we sell is TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager).  IBM is announcing an alternative licensing model to PVUs for TSM, which is Capacity-based licensing.  Similar to SVC and TPC, Capacity-based licensing is determined by the # of Terabytes (TB) of data that a customer is backing up.

 

The primary objective is to drive net new business, and compete more aggressively against EMC and Symantec.

<title>*Flash Note* International Business Machines Corporation (IBM): Acquires Sterling Commerce</title>

<description><![CDATA[<b>What happened:</b> On Monday, May 24, before the open, IBM announced plans to acquire Sterling Commerce from AT&T for $1.4bn in cash, which we estimate represents approximately 2-3x TTM revenue. The acquisition is expected to close in 2H10 and will join the WebSphere team (13% of IBM Software), adding about 2-3% growth to the software division in 2011 and consistent with IBM stated goal of $20bn in acquisitions by 2015.

<b>Why it matters: </b>Sterling Commerce offers hosted electronic data interchange (EDI) and application integration solutions, and will extend IBM's on premise middleware stack. The market is fairly mature, with low growth in recent years, but with potential for solid profitability. Strategically, IBM gains a greater presence in over 18,000 customers, primarily in the manufacturing, retail and financial services business, and fits well with IBM's outsourcing and services businesses. 
<b>
Valuation:</b> Our 12 month price target is $150, which is approximately 12x our 2011E EPS estimate, a meaningful discount to the market and large cap tech peers. Our price target assumes no multiple expansion; however, we believe that market sentiment will continue to improve as the market better understands the potential for upward revisions in an improving economy and the relative strength of IBM's business model as the tech sector continues to mature and consolidate.

<description><![CDATA[Effective April 27, IBM Cognos 8 Planning Version 8.4.1 becomes the default shipping version of IBM Cognos 8 Planning software. 

New Features:
IBM Cognos 8 Planning 8.4.1 is a conformance release to IBM Cognos 8 BI 8.4.1 that expands the solution's value by including the IBM Cognos 8 Mashup Service. This API automatically and securely exposes BI content as a Web service. With the IBM Cognos 8 Mashup Service, customers can extend their BI content into existing applications and processes and "mash" content with other applications and visualizations.

Licensing Changes:
Packaging and pricing will not change, but IBM Cognos 8 Planning Version 8.4.1 does include an Enterprise Planning Licensing change. All customers under Enterprise Planning licensing will be granted equivalent Enterprise Planning TM1 Contributor rights when they purchase an IBM Cognos Analytic Server and at least one TM1 Modeler Role. Customers not on the Enterprise Planning licensing can trade up their licenses to the current version of Enterprise Planning licenses if they wish to participate in this expansion. <a target="_blank"  href="https://www-304.ibm.com/usrsrvc/account/userservices/jsp/login.jsp?persistPage=true&page=/partnerworld/wps/servlet/mem/ContentHandler/C748389B04653A25&PD-REFERER=none&error=">Additional information on these changes</a>.

Building upon our ongoing commitment to growth in the Mid-Market, we are making a significant investment in marketing funding and resources that are designed to help you, our Business Partners, succeed in this fast-growing Mid-Market space.   

IBM will deliver incremental marketing assistance to eligible Business Partners using a professional Marketing Services Vendor, TSL Marketing, to drive Mid-Market revenue in 2010. TSL Marketing will be fully supported by IBM in servicing our Business Partners.  Eligible Business Partners will have access to skilled, experienced resources knowledgeable in IBM’s products, plays, and tools. They can select from available pre-developed campaign themes or work with TSL Marketing to develop custom themes.  Business Partners who are eligible for the offering have the flexibility to market any IBM Hardware, Software or Services solution which they are authorized to sell.  Taking a total end-to-end approach, TSL Marketing will help Business Partners develop their 2010 marketing plan, assist with list development and acquisition, and aid with the execution of initiatives.  TSL Marketing is available to assist with funds and lead management, increasing Business Partner productivity.  Eligible Business Partners may also choose to execute campaigns with their own marketing vendor or Distributor. 

The IBM PartnerWorld level and prior revenue attainment are instrumental in determining each Business Partner's eligibility for, and the level of co-funded dollars available through, the Mid-Market Co-Marketing Offering.   Business Partners with combined IBM Hardware and Software revenue of at least $25,000 USD for the period from Q4 2008 through Q3 2009 inclusive are eligible for the Entry Offering.  Business Partners with combined IBM Hardware and Software revenue of at least $150,000 USD for the period from Q4 2008 through Q3 2009 inclusive are eligible for Core Offering, which provides eligible Business Partners with the potential to request additional co-funded dollars based upon successful execution of marketing tactics.
